Santa Carving Class
Registration deadline is one week before
Two sessions - on Zoom
There may not be a single other carving subject as popular as Santa at this time of the year. In keeping with the spirit of the season I am offering a two-session remotely delivered class in which we will carve a Santa ornament from an egg-shaped basswood blank. The class sessions will be help on Saturday November 6 and 13 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. Pictures of the finished project as well as stages of carving are shown here. This project is intended for carvers with some experience, and, although safety and tool maintenance will be mentioned, these topics will not be discussed at any depth. The material is a basswood blank, turned to be egg shaped. Class participants will need at least three tools, a V tool, a carving knife and medium sweep gouge. In addition to these, I typically use a shallow sweep gouge and a couple of micro tools, these are nice to have, but not absolutely necessary. We will provide the blank, and can help provide loaner tools if needed. It is interesting to note that there is a whole sub-genre of carving caricatures, both human and animal, starting with an egg-shaped blank. Furthermore, many of the human caricatures follow the same basic pattern and facial geometry of these Santa carvings. With a few deft strokes Santa can become a pirate, a golfer, a fisherman and on and on. These make interesting stand-alone figures as well as hanging ornaments, if using a smaller blank. We will talk about painting, and other projects using this material toward the end of the second session.
DATES/TIMES - Two consecutive Saturdays, 1:00-3:00 PM
COST - small fee for the materials; possibly some tool costs for you but we do have some loaner kits available. Postage for materials or tools extra.
